Where is God: Near or Far Away?

As shocking it may be to some people, there is God’s presence in every living entity …

The Supersoul or Superself, also known as Paramatma, represents a partial aspect of the Supreme Person who governs and sanctions all activities within the material world.

Paramatma resides within every atom and every living being, accompanying the individual soul (atma) throughout every of our lifetimes in material bodies, aiding in the fulfillment of our unique destinies and desires.

In the 13th Chapter of the Bhagavad-gita, Krishna explains that He, as the Supersoul, simultaneously dwells in the hearts of all beings as their well-wishing friend, the witness to all actions, the sustainer of everything, and the supreme controller of the Universe.

The best Bhagavat Gita quote that explains it well says
“The Supreme Truth exists outside and inside of all living beings, the moving and the nonmoving. Because He is subtle, He is beyond the power of the material senses to see or to know. Although far, far away, He is also near to all.”

The Upanishads provide an allegory of the Supersoul and individual soul as two birds sitting on a tree. One bird is anxiously consuming fruits from that tree, while another bird is observing him in a calm manner. The anxious bird represents us, living entities, while the witnessing bird symbolizes the Supersoul (Paramatma). In essence, these two birds illustrate our relationship with Paramatma.

We can recognize the presence of the Supersoul through the action of intelligence. When we identify objects, make and execute plans, and differentiate between matter and spirit, we are receiving guidance from the Supersoul. Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.2.35 Purport states “Every living being has his intelligence, and this intelligence, being the direction of some higher authority, is just like a father giving direction to his son. The higher authority, who is present and residing within every individual living being, is the Superself.”
